Take Up Space

Has there ever been a time when it’s more important for you to make sure you are heard? That people know you deserve to be where you are, standing at the front of the room? Maybe. I think during every era of history, that statement is made. “There’s never been a more important time than now…” Regardless, it’s true. You have a voice, a presence, and something to say. Get up there and take up space. Don’t make yourself small.

Confidence is attractive

Not arrogance. Don’t get the two confused. Confidence is steady and ready. Arrogance is cocky and condescending. Confidence attracts other people because we find it inspiring, motivating, and to some degree, maybe comforting. We’re more relaxed when we’re confident. Not laid back about to fall asleep or sloppy; relaxed and ready.

When you have the floor, take up space. Channel energy into your arms and release your clasped hands. Open your stance. Throw those shoulders back.  Stand up a little taller. Look people in the eye. Get excited about what you’re saying to us. Get animated. If you’re not excited about what you’re saying, how can we be?

What you say matters, but HOW you say it might matter even more. Just consult your email inbox. I’m willing to bet there’s a message in there that you read some “tone” into. Think about that as you prepare to speak.

Variety is the spice of life

No matter what your style, the same thing gets boring after a while. Varying your tone, the speed with which you speak, your volume and cadence; that’s what makes you more interesting as a speaker. Whether you have an audience of one or 100, that’s true.

Bottom line?

We need your voice. We need to hear what you have to say. You need to say it in a way that keeps our attention and interest. Take up space. It’s a win-win for us both.
